Help the hungry...

Assalamualaikum...

Alhamdulillah, here is another site that makes donating and helping the needy very easy and simple.

It's even simpler than Socialvibe because you don't have to sign up as a member, you just play and donate! Both Free rice and Socialvibe support the World Food Programme, so whichever you wish to click on (left or right), you're still contributing to help those in need of food due to natural disasters, conflict, poverty, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment.

Hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to the health worldwide; greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

There are 1.02 billion undernourished people in the world today.

A person dies of hunger and malnutrition every 6 seconds.

More than 60 percent of chronically hungry people are women.

907 million people in developing countries alone are hungry.

10.9 million children under five die in developing countries each year. Malnutrition and hunger-related diseases cause 60 percent of the deaths.

The number of undernourished people in the world increased by 75 million in 2007 and 40 million in 2008, largely due to higher food prices.

Every year World Food Programme (WFP) feeds more than 20 million children in school feeding programmes in some 70 countries. In 2008, WFP fed a record 23 million children.

Support World Food Programme, support those in need. It only takes a few minutes.

Assalamualaikum..

p.s: credits to my sister for suggesting Free rice and providing the links and sites =P

SocialVibe...

Nursyahidah Sidek invites you to SocialVibe.com

Assalamualaikum..

For those who received my last message on Facebook, you should know that I'm trying to make my time on the net more useful and productive. Alhamdulillah, I'm getting there bit by bit. I also want to make positive changes, InsyaAllah. I want to walk the walk because so many people, including myself, just used to talk the talk but little to no actions were taken.

A reminder to myself before others, do not postpone what you can do today till tomorrow. Procrastinating and hypocrisy is a destructive habit. It will get you nowhere, simple as that. Despite knowing this, most of us still do it because it's so easy to do. We make excuses for ourselves and take for granted the gift that is, Today.

Life is short and that's a fact.

Get motivated, be motivated and stay motivated to make that change. Whether its doing your laundry today or giving a loved one a call or signing up as a organ donor or doing that overdue assignment or recycling your trash or cleaning out that forgotten store or helping the needy, make an effort to make it happen.

Alhamdulillah, I've found a site that can help me to help the less fortunate while I'm online. It's not as fun and exciting as online games or social networking sites but it only takes a few minutes a day and I know my actions are making a difference for communities in need.

So please do join me on SocialVibe or just complete a few activities by clicking on the socialvibe badge on my sidebar =) thank you!

Friendship...

Assalamualaikum...

It happened back in 2003, when i just entered Convent High school. Fresh from "I'm finally in High school!" bug, the first few weeks were full of taklimats, introductions and new beginnings. For example, discipline taklimat (from the famous Puan Khatijah, hehe), a tour of the school, introduction of subjects and teachers who'd be teaching em, getting used to our classrooms, new socks, new friends and trying to remember each others names.

It happened during our first Pendidkan Jasmani class, when i was just about to go into the field. Fresh from "Don't look! I'm gonna change. Don't peep!...*squeal*.." hype in the classroom, everyone was excited for some freedom. We gathered in the bio lab and the class seemed to have naturally made cliques and groups among ourselves. I didn't exactly know where i fitted in, but i remember i was going around mingle-ing  with everybody. I was the Penolong Ketua Tingkatan, so i felt kinda obligated to try to warm up to all my classmates, as if i were fishing for votes in a campaign.

As we moved out to the field, i noticed something.

A girl was walking behind me. She had a small frame, neat ponytail, blue spectacles that were a bit lop sided and she walked dragging her feet behind her once in a while. She was quiet most of the time but nobody felt offended by it or bullied her about it. She held her own, you know. As in, her presence was always felt and she was respected even though she didn't say much.

She had the warmest smile.

Then i realised, she's been walking behind me for quite some time and on a number of different occasions too. Being the gutsy me, i turned around without a 2nd thought and asked her up front.

"Why are you following me?", i asked. The second i heard myself and and saw her pale face looking up at me, i became conscious of how rash my actions were. I mean, what good can come from asking that type of question. Here we were, both insecure and in a situation knowing that we were going to make a fool of ourselves. I secretly feared the answer that might come.

She lifted her head and simply said, "I just want to be your friend."

I smiled.

And Tay Su Ann smiled back at me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This moment, is one of my best moments in high school. Not just because i made a great friend out of it, but because of its honesty and simplicity.

A quirk of fate that started with an awkward question, but ended up with open arms to friendship.

Just felt like sharing =)

Assalamualaikum...

Give hope...

Assalamualaikum...

Although there have been advances in medical technology and donation, the demand for organ, eye and tissue donation still vastly exceeds the number of donors.

Organ donation statistics in America
The statistics below is just covering America. The numbers would be even higher if it were world statistics. Tried to search for it and Malaysia's stats too but couldn't find it.

More than 100,000 men, women and children currently need life-saving organ transplants.

Every 10 minutes another name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list.

An average of 18 people die each day from the lack of available organs for transplant.

In 2009, there were 8,021 deceased organ donors and 6,610 living organ donors resulting in 28,465 organ transplants.

Last year, more than 42,000 grafts were made available for transplant by eye banks within the United States.

According to research, 98% of all adults have heard about organ donation and 86% have heard of tissue donation.

90% of Americans say they support donation, but only 30% know the essential steps to take to be a donor.

Imagine if the person who needed a transplant was your spouse or one of your parents, siblings, relative or friends. Would you donate then?

Imagine if it were you who needed an organ transplant. You'd be hoping that someone had a life sign that would match your case. Even then, you'd have to wait your turn on the transplant list.

Give so that others can live. InsyaAllah.

Assalamualaikum...

Organ donation..

Assalamualaikum...

Alhamdulillah, I am finally an organ donor. Just faxed my form to the National Transplant Center in K.L and InsyaAllah I'll get my card next week. I've had the intention to do so since i was in high school tapi asek tangguh je and buat alasan, "I don't have enough info yet", "How's the procedure?", "I'll do it when there's a campaign or something", "what's the hukum on this topic?", "I don't know", "I'll do it another day", etc.

With the help of a friend and Allah swt guidance, Alhamdulillah, i managed to find all the info i needed to make up my mind, understand all the procedures and follow through with it. I signed up with my sister and another friend of mine. So for those who are interested in becoming an organ donor, here is some links and info to help you.

http://rayma.com.my/giftoflife/FAQ.html
- link to frequently asked questions, donor pledge form and contact details of the National Transplant center.

http://www.themodernreligion.com/misc/hh/organ-transplant.html - info about islamic ruling on organ donation. It's pretty long but it's thorough. We should try to know as much as possible before we make our decision. So that when we do decide, our intention (niat) is pure. InsyaAllah, we will get rewards for it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQrM5-Mj7VI  - video by Dr. Zakir Naik on organ donation

After reading up on all the info, i called the center to ask a few questions. Here's a summary of the Q & A's.

1. In part 2 of the form, if i don't want option A but i would like to donate more than one organ in option B, can i tick more than one organ?
yes.

2. In part 3 of the form, is there any preference as to who i should put as my next of kin? My siblings or my parents?
Anyone would do, as long as that person is related to you and is close to you.

3. Is the procedure of signing up as a donor really this simple? Just one form and that's it?
Yes. There's no need for any other identification documents or health statements. This is just a personal pledge that states your permission to go ahead with organ donation when the time comes (death of course).

When you are deceased, your body is legally under the guardian of your next of kin or family members who are present. If they change their minds or disagree and doesn't want to go through with the organ donation, their decision will over rule your pledge and the hospital will respect any decision the family makes.

4. Are there specific hospitals that will do the organ removal procedure?
No. All hospitals have trained staff that will perform the organ removal procedure. Whichever hospital your family takes your body to, along with your pledge and their permission, the organ donation procedure will go ahead.

5. For muslims, will the hospital staff do all of the urusan jenazah such as mandikan mayat and kafan?
This is up to the decision of the family members. If they want the hospital to do it, they have staff to do so, but if the family already have their own arrangements, the hospital will return the body to the family members as soon as the organ removal procedure is done.

They just take the body, remove the respective organs and return the body. The rest of the proceedings will be according to the family members plans and religious beliefs.

6. Which is the most preferred method for me to sign up? Fax, mail, email?
Fax. Print the form, fill it up, make sure you sign it and the details are correct and fax it to 0326156269, which is the National Transplant Center fax number. You will get your card through the post which would take anytime between 1-3 weeks depending on your location.

Or you can go to these hospital, listed in this link http://www.malaysiayellowpages.net/organdonation/nation.htm and just say that you wana sign up as an organ donor. They will sort things out for you and take you through the steps.

Other than this, they did give me extra information about certain types of deaths and in these cases, what organs they are allowed to take. In any case, they will make sure that the organ is in good condition to be removed and used in a transplant operation. I suggest you give the center a ring yourself so that you can clear any doubts you have or if you would like any other information.

Fur balls..

Assalamualaikum..

Alhamdulillah, I've 10 healthy hamsters now. It started off with just two, then tinggal satu, bought another two, then tinggal 2, dapat baby 3 ekor, jadi lima, then swap a couple with one of my friends to avoid inbreeding, dapat lah tujuh, lama-lama berkurangan jadi empat, pastu dapat baby lagi satu, then dapat tiga lagi and another two, all from my eldest couple (memang subur couple tu, hehe).

Sepuluh da macam ramai la pulak, even though i enjoy taking care of them. My mum suggested to sell the babies to pet shops, tapi i tak naaak. Nanti tak tahu siapa yang beli and jaga mereka macam mana and susah la nak tanya khabar nanti >_< So to my friends, siapa-siapa yang nak hamster yang cute and senang utk dijaga, habaq mai la ye. Jangan malu-malu.. haha.

Four of the lil' fur balls are up for grabs. They are Robovsky hamsters, a type of dwarf hamster originally from Russia. Their average life span is only for two years. Cage, food, bathing sand, exercise wheel and other accessories will be given. You can take two, three or four of them but not one, kesian dia sorang-sorang nanti. Everything's free of charge as long as you promise to take care of them well and make sure they have a happy life =)

For more info, you can contact me on my mobile, my celcom or maxis number pon boleh.
